“Movie Title: 96”
Director: Prem Kumar
Produced: S.Nanthagopal
Cast: Vijay Sethupathi, Trisha, Adhithya Bhaskar, Gauri Kishan, Devadarshini
The story revolves around Ram (Vijay Sethupathi) a travel photographer who loves to travel and capture passionate moments on his camera. He happens to visit Tanjore his native place and revives a lot of memories of his childhood and school life with his childhood love Janaki (Trisha ). And that leads to a reunion. He meets his Janu after a gap of 22 years and the story unfolds.
The story revolves around a reunion of batch 96. It’s a matured love story and a romantic film that brings back a lot of nostalgic memories. We have seen Cheran’s movie “Autograph” in the past. But this movie by Prem Kumar has set a different trend, both the leads in the movie the male and female performers get equal importance. The first half takes us through the nostalgic memories and the story is narrated well and the teenage romance is beautifully depicted. In the second half, the plot unfolds as the events happen on a night, and we get to know why they never connected and what happened in their lives during the past 22 years. We even get to know the feelings they still have for each other. A few things do remind us of the film “Before Sunset,” especially of the time limit of their reunion.
This is one of Trisha’s best performances and her expressions have been combined with class and elegance. Both Trisha’s and Vijay Sethupathi’s chemistry has created magic on screen. Vijay Sethupathi is a natural performer and does his best in this film. Cinematographer Prem Kumar in his debut directorial movie has beautifully lead the audience into a world of nostalgia. He tells the audience the importance of letting go of what you really love. Adithya Bhaskar and Gouri Kishan playing the young Ramu and Janu have performed exceptionally well. Every other actor Devadarshini, Bagavathi Perumal Aadukalam Murugadoss, Janagaraj, and Kavithalaya Krishnan were perfect and played their roles well. Govind Vasantha’s song Kadhale Kadhale is one of my favorites. This movie is going to be remembered for many years to come for its elegant and simple story. It is a tribute to unconditional love and is a must watch movie.
