“Biennale has put Kochi on the International Cultural Map.”
This week I decided to take you for a walk through the streets of Fort Kochi. As we enter the place we are taken to a different period of time. The whole place has a magic of its own. We can see the beautiful transition of architecture from the colonial style to the Indo European style. The serene beach and pristine waters offer a scenic view to its beauty. It is also a land of Chinese fishing nets.
Fort Kochi is a retreat for visitors from every part of the world and from all parts of India. The main attractions are the Historic Fort and lately the Kochi Muziris Biennale which is held every other year in Fort Kochi.
The Kochi- Muziris Biennale, is an International Exhibition Contemporary Art. It became a reality in 2012 in Kochi. “Biennale means every other year.” This is the fourth Kochi Muziris Biennale. Its the biggest art exhibition in India. And the biggest contemporary art festival in Asia. The Kochi Biennale Foundation was founded in 2010 with the support from the government. The founders were Bose Krishnamachari and Riyas Komu. They were the curators too for the Biennale 2012. The Kochi Biennale Foundation also conserves the heritage properties and monuments and it also uplifts the traditional forms of art and culture.
The exhibition offers a rich variety of seminars, talks, music, various screenings, workshops, and educational activities for school children and students. This year the curator is Anita Dube. The majority of artists are females. A variety of Indian and international artists have displayed their artworks across a variety of mediums.-paintings films, sculptures performance art and media. Its known as people’s Biennale. Its works are showcased in cafes, old warehouses, heritage properties existing galleries etc.
In the beginning, no one knew what Biennale was but now it’s become so popular and it’s wonderful to see students and families experience the art. Every year the curator has taken us through different paths and it has increased the curiosity of the people. Lakhs of people from our state and other states have come in large numbers to see the art exhibition. Tourists from foreign countries have become regular visitors. they have even started booking their rooms for the next Biennale in advance. The local people are happy because Biennale has put Kochi on the international Cultural Map. and have helped them develop economically.
Since the past two months, the Kochi Muziris Biennale has become the talk all over and it has caught everyone’s attention. The Biennale is getting over on March 29th.
