# Everyone is taught to respect our elders, but how many of us respect them? and why do we not respect them?
Life is full of challenges and surprises. We should learn to cope with them through courage and conviction. We always should learn to look at the positive side of life. It is important to behave as a responsible person with dignity and decorum that is required by the position we hold. True joy comes from shaping and giving and not by hoarding and exploiting. We should try and make others experience joy when they come into contact with us.
Parents are always the role models for our children. Our parents have given us a life full of opportunities, comfort, and privileges. We must express our love and gratitude to them. As they are our first teachers who taught us how to love, how to care, how to give and how to forgive. Our elders have more knowledge and wisdom than us. They have a set of principles, values, and morals imbibed in them. The elderly people of our society are called the grey generation and the young people of our society are called the new generation. Aging is a part of life and it takes a toll on one’s life.
Respect is a basic component of all relations. Respect, grace, and knowledge should be imbibed in us. We need to assess the situation. We should respect our elders with dignity and appreciation. They deserve it because most of them have life experiences that we should listen to and learn from. We must instill gratitude, compassion, and respect for the elderly in our children. Treating our elders with respect is always a privilege and never a task. By spending time with them often and caring for them, we establish relationships. They teach us the value of relationships, family, and life. They guide us and give us good counsel to lead a better life.
Nowadays our elders are not given much respect, they are being treated badly. They don’t get the love, affection, and respect they deserve. We tend to see the family spending less quality time with them, which makes them unhappy. The problem of generation gap occurs and misunderstandings and quarrels happen. The elders have no more roles in the family, they are sent to old age homes or nursing homes and they are forgotten completely, it’s sad to see such cases. But there are cultures and people where the elders are still treated with respect. Gratitude is shown in many forms, we express it through love, kindness, and respect. The elders were once young and strong, they gave the best years of their lives to raise their children. They faced many challenges in their lives by raising their kids and grandchildren. They have to be respected and honored for all that they have done for us and the society. We should make them feel special. They feel happy when we spend quality time listening and expressing our love and kindness to them. If we encourage them to get involved in things they are capable of doing, they feel happy and respected that their contributions are still valued by others.
We must be ever ready to selfless caring and sharing. It does not matter how long we live, but how we live. We should observe what is absurd in the conduct of others and avoid it in our behavior. The main thing we must do is to love selflessly, forgive willingly, share generously, serve wholeheartedly, be responsible and accountable. We must adorn oneself with moral integrity in words and deeds.
