The much awaited Brahmāstra Part one -Shiva, starring Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt was released in theatres on September 9, 2022.
Ranbir Kapoor(Shiva) , is an orphan who earns his living as a DJ. The film opens with him performing at a big Durga Puja gathering where he sees Aliya Bhatt (Isha),for the first time. Shiva is blessed with the Agniastra (fire Power)and thereby tied to the Brahmand or the Astraverse. Brahmāstra, the weapon of all weapons, gets divided into three parts for safe keeping. The lead pair throughout the film is on a mission to protect the Brahmāstra from the villain Junoon.
Shah Rukh Khan(Mohan Bhargav),who plays the renowned scientist who possesses the Vanar Astra(Monkey Power) is shown to be a part of the community that is in charge of protecting the Brahmāstra. It was refreshing to watch Khan do his part on the big screen after a very long time. Nagarjuna Akkineni(Anish Shetty), plays an artist. He is gifted with the Nandiastra (Bull Power). Mouni Roy(Junoon), plays the villian and along with two of her followers are bent on owning the Brahmāstra. Amitabh Bachchan’s (Guru) character in the storyline is reduced to being a mere guru.
The film has received mixed reviews with the audience calling it a visual spectacle while also admitting that the story and dialogues could have been much better . The VFX in the movie, which has largely received accolades ,might continue to draw the audience to the theatres. Apart from the VFX, the only aspects one can take away are the BGM and the songs, Kesariya’, ‘Deva-Deva’, ‘Rasiya’ and ‘Dance Ka Bhoot’ all turning out to be nice.
The movie is a trilogy and it feels more like a big budget sci-fi fantasy drama against the backdrop of Hindu mythology. The first part is overall a missed opportunity and the unsuccessful attempt at explanation of the story lasts till the very last minute. At the end of the film , the makers have announced Brahmāstra -Part-2-Dev. I hope that has a better screenplay and dialogues compared to Part I. The movie is definitely a visual spectacle and is a must watch on the Big Screen. Watch out for a special cameo!
